Tantalum
Researchers from IIT Ropar, led by Dr. Resmi Sebastian, discover tantalum, a rare metal, in the sands of the Sutlej River in Punjab, India.
The discovery was unintentional during experiments focused on characterizing Sutlej river sand for seismic impact assessment.
Tantalum finds extensive use in electronics and semiconductors, making the discovery significant for technological applications.
Tantalum, discovered in 1802, was initially confused with niobium but later distinguished by Swiss chemist Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac in 1866.
The metal's name originates from Greek mythology, referencing King Tantalus, symbolizing tantalum's insolubility in acids.
The discovery opens avenues for further exploration of tantalum deposits and their potential economic significance.
